"Benefits" - Wild One - North Highlands
Today we’d like to introduce you to NYC-based band North Highlands, who will be opening for Pearl and the Beard at their “Prodigal Daughter” Single Release Show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on February 16th (Lacrymosa kicks off the evening). The upbeat sextet have been making music together since their days at NYU. They released their debut LP, Wild One, at the end of last year, and you can listen to the first single, “Benefits,” above. Stereogum says “‘Benefits’…sounds like the work of a band in the throes of songwriting maturation: the verse’s lilt cedes to a dance-rock break, the guitars buried in the mix but arpeggiating around singer Brenda Melvi’s sweetly intoned “Take what you want”s in a way that might recall a gentler Metric.”

You may have noticed that there’s a highly publicized football game happening this Sunday. Well, we have the perfect post-Superbowl activity for you, whether you’re celebrating, trying to lift your spirits after a crushing defeat, or a Ravens or 49ers fan who’s trying to pretend the game never existed. Lacrymosa will be taking the stage at Joe’s Pub with renowned singer/songwriter (and Sacramento native) Sea of Bees. The show is late (9:30pm), and the game will be over, so you have no excuse! ![Sacramento’s genre-bending singer-songwriter Sea of Bees (nee Julie Ann Baenziger) is playing a string of New York shows at the beginning of February, and I’m happy to announce that I will also be playing one of these shows! I’m a huge fan of Julie’s and I’m excited to see her in such an intimate setting. Check out her live performance of “The Woods” on Break Thru Radio (here). See you in February!
